Hope Waddell Old Students' Association - North America (HWOSA-NA) was organized in 2004 with the initial efforts by old HWTI students residing in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. By the July 4th, 2004 weekend, an inaugural reunion was held at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Crystal City, Virginia. HWOSA-NA was formally constituted on July 2nd, 2004 at a business meeting attended by members from all regions of the United States. The theme for that reunion was to "increase the boarding capacity" at HWTI. Funds were raised at the reunion to support the Kitchen renovation project.
Membership in the Association is open to all former students of Hope Waddell Training Institution, Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria (the "Institution"), residing in North America and other persons who share the common goals and objectives of the Association. Our alma mater, Hope Waddell Training Institution (HWTI) was founded in 1895 in Calabar, Nigeria. HWTI was the third secondary school established in Nigeria and the first established in Eastern Nigeria. More importantly HWTI offered a comprehensive education that included courses in carpentary, printing, building technology, secretarial studies, electrical technology, marine engineering and nautical studies. Practical training to students in its maritime studies department was offered on a vessel, "The Diamond" on the Calabar River.
HWTI contributed immensely in shaping the lives of many prominent Africans. In its hey-day, the school’s student population reflected an international composition with students coming from all over West Africa. Hope Waddell alumni world wide will proudly tell all that are willing to listen that the education they received was second to none.
We the members of HWOSA-NA are dedicated to restoring our alma mater to it's past glory.
